Watch out for the quendas!
Yes, I've arrived in Perth, Australia 🇦🇺, home of the quenda.
What's a quenda, you might ask?
It's a native marsupial rat species found only in southwestern Australia. They're quite common in the outskirts of Perth, Australia's fourth largest city, hence the street warning signs.
Apart from birds and spiders (no, they're not that deadly... only three people have died from a spider bite in Australia in the past 120 years!), it's actually quite rare to see native animals such as quendas in Australia's suburbs, where an overwhelming majority of Aussies live. However, you can find plenty of destructive introduced species such as foxes, cats and rabbits — these are definitely not considered "cute" in Australia.
Talking of introduced species, it's not all one way. There's the irony where wallabies, many varieties of which are endangered in their native homeland of Australia due to competition for habitats from introduced species, have spread to places such as New Zealand and Inchconnachan in Scotland and become pests themselves.

Now if you mention "quenda" to most other Aussies away from the Perth region, they'll think you're talking about "qanda".
Is this a related animal?
Totally not! Qanda is the common Aussie reference for the long-running but recently cancelled Australian panel talk show "Q+A". Its format was similar to Question Time on the BBC in the UK or Questions and Answers on Ireland's RTÉ. For years, Q+A was must-see viewing for anyone interested in Australian current affairs, with all of Australia's top politicians and decision-makers having appeared on it. Part of the show's initial popularity was built on its early adoption and integration of social media – its live Twitter feed used to get very heated.
