The other day an Australian friend of mine told me of this encounter he had when he was living in the UK .
One day, his colleagues were making fun of his accent, so he told them: 'stop paying me out'.
They all looked puzzled, with one of his colleagues then saying 'What do you mean? We're not giving you money.' 💵
That's when he realised he had said something uniquely Australian 🐨
👉 While 'to pay out' means 'to disburse or hand out money', in Australian speech it's far more commonly used to mean 'to criticise, mock or make fun of someone or something'.
You can pay someone out for the way they look, what they said, the way they eat their Vegemite sandwiches, etc., or pay something out for being useless, a waste of time... you get the picture.
There's also a noun to go with it – a payout (a criticism).
So if someone is paying you out, you can get them to stop by saying 'lay off with the payouts!'🚨
