'The bomb got it wrong' 💣
Now this is something you're bound to hear from Aussies when what was forecast to be the perfect sunny day for your picnic or sports event is ruined by an unexpected downpour or a blustery southerly gale.
And when you've tuned in to the news on Australian TV or radio, you might hear that there's a report from 'the bomb' and it has something to do with... the weather?!
So what's this 'bomb' that Aussies talk about and what's it got to do with the weather?
Well, it's not as shattering as you'd think. It's actually the 'BoM', otherwise known as the Bureau of Meteorology, i.e. the office where the experts predict the weather.
While the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia has been around for ages, it's only in the past two decades that Australians have actually been calling it 'the BoM' (i.e. the same as 'the bomb')
However the BoM has 'got it wrong' in another way in the past.
Given that it's not exactly a positive connotation when the acronym of your bureau is a homonym of an exploding device that causes mass destruction and death, in 2023 the BoM decided to spend a bomb on a rebrand.
And what did the BoM get for that...?
A statement issued to media organisations politely asking them to stop calling it 'the BoM' and instead say 'the Bureau of Meteorology' on first instance, followed by 'the Bureau' at every other instance. A rather logical, if not predictable, request that seemingly was not worth the AU$70,000 paid for it.
But oh no! The BoM truly dropped a bombshell.
The Aussie public was not having any part of this and made it clear, whether it be on social media or elsewhere, that the Bureau will be 'the BoM' forever!
Even then Australian Environment Minister Tanya Pliberšek waded into the matter and questioned what the BoM should really be focusing on.

So the BoM's rebrand turned out to be a complete bomb.
Suffice to say, the BoM had to issue a new statement... "The community is welcome to refer to the Bureau in any way they wish, including referring to us as the BoM"
So from what it seems, they truly are 'the BoM'!
