What's old is new!
Announcing that Princes Amongst Men: Journeys with Gypsy Musicians by Garth Cartwright is back!
First released in 2005, Princes Amongst Men is about Cartwright's journey through Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Romania, interviewing some of the biggest names in Romani music of the time: Esma Redžepova, Šaban Bajramović, Taraf de Haidouks, Ivo (Ibryama) Papazov and many more. Cartwright was also the first western journalist to interview Bulgarian Roma superstar Azis, featured in the book.
This was one of the first of many books I've contributed with my extensive knowledge in Balkan music, popular culture and history. I even briefly feature in it!
As part of its re-release, I've been filling in Garth with the details of what has happened with Balkan music in the past two decades to go into the new afterword. We're talking about developments such as how YouTube has become the main media platform for music in the Balkans, trap has had the biggest influence on Balkan music genres in the past decade, and lately the thumping beats of saxophone-heavy Bulgarian Romani chalga has taken the Balkans by storm.
Details about the date of the re-release will be coming soon.
In the meantime, if you require consultation on the finer details of Balkan culture, politics and music, and/or help to avoid being the target of those pesky Balkan keyboard warriors, then let's talk. Email me at info@nicknasev.com
