With extreme hot weather hitting London all this week, I can genuinely say that nearly everyone here seems to have 'gone troppo'!
🤪 What does 'going troppo' mean?
'Going troppo' is a common Australian saying originally meaning 'to go crazy, mad or behave erratically, usually as a result of extended exposure to extreme heat and/or humidity in tropical or hot climates.'
The phrase originated during World War II among Australian military personnel stationed in the Pacific and Southeast Asia (particularly Borneo). Most Aussies come from temperate climes, so the intense, isolating conditions and unrelenting tropical heat of these regions would slowly drive these soldiers out of their minds.
The same climatic conditions can be found in the sparsely populated tropical north of Australia. In the 'build-up' months of October, November and December leading to the 'wet season', the temperatures are so intense and the humidity oppressive to the point that the uninitiated are known to end up doing crazy things.
Another term for being heat- and humid-affected like this in northern Australia is 'mango madness' 🥭
While it started as a military descriptor for cabin fever and mental fatigue, today the term 'going troppo' in Australia is often used much more broadly to describe anyone acting a bit wild, unrestrained or unusually carefree.
Example:
Check out Dave over there singing loudly in the office for no reason. Seems like he's gone a bit troppo.
👉 How about you? Do you feel that you've gone a bit troppo lately?
