Have you ever heard about the dongas in Australia? They come in all sizes, usually hidden Down Under in the outback. Here's their story...
If you saw my post about FIFO/DIDO/BIBO, you might have an idea of what I mean.
🔎 So what's a "donga"?
It's an Australian term for a "demountable" – a portable, modular building used primarily in remote Australian construction and mining sites for temporary housing. These prefabricated units are designed for quick transport and installation, offering functional, often basic living quarters for workers, though some can be customised with amenities like kitchens and ensuites. They provide a cost-effective and flexible solution for accommodating workforces in isolated areas.
There's a reason why the term "donga" often raises the eyebrows of the uninitiated... it sounds the same as an old slang term in Australian, British and other variants of English, referring to... erm... a male bodily appendage 🍆

🔎 So where did the term "donga" come from?
Well, this has been baffling Australian linguists for decades.
🇿🇦 Some claim that it has origins from "udonga" (meaning "a channel or gully formed by the action of water") in the South African languages Zulu and Xhosa, which via South African English and Afrikaans then entered into Australian English with the return of Australian soldiers from the Boer War at the very beginning of the 20th century. In Australia the initial "u" was dropped, its original South African meaning held on, but somehow its current definition was later also adopted.
🇵🇬 Others claim that "donga" comes from New Guinea, where it means "house" and introduced into Australian English by returning Australian soldiers after WWII.
More details about the disputed origins of the term "donga" can be found here.
So if someone from Australia mentions dongas, now you know that everything's above board... well, in most cases 😁
