What’s the latest with Atidje Muratova, Europe’s last keeper of wild bees and the intriguing subject of the award-winning, Oscar-nominated 2019 Macedonian documentary Honeyland?
The Macedonian magazine Glamur found out recently by visiting Atidje, who now lives in the village of Lozovo (formerly Djumajlija) not far from the area where she and her late mother were the last permanent inhabitants. The people of Lozovo, which was an ethnic Turkish village until Macedonia’s Muslim populations migrated en masse to Turkey in the 1950s, and then populated predominantly by ethnic Macedonians, have warmly welcomed Atidje into their community.
Atidje is still looking after her bees, earning money partly from the sale of her honey, for which she said demand is still high, though she does fear the current drought affecting Macedonia could jeopardise this year’s batch.
As for tips on preparing honey, Atidje said she strictly keeps to her time-honoured “half for me, half for the bees” approach, and that the best day to extract honey each year is September 8.
