What's your best option when needing sensitive and confidential documents translated?
Here's a case...
A law firm needed a witness statement on a very sensitive matter to be translated. The firm assigned the job to a large translation company – one that appears prominently on the first page of internet searches. What would you do if you find out that in getting someone to translate that statement, that translation company just sent a job request as an anonymous group email to their list of translators... along with the entire witness statement attached with no privacy protections applied?
I know I'd be extremely furious! 😤
Well, I was the recipient of such an email. There it was – this poor person's witness statement just sent like that not only to me but also a number of other third parties. Any one of us could've been acquaintances of those involved in this case and just forwarded the attachment on to anyone.
When I reported this violation to the translation company in question, they responded saying how much they take data protection very seriously. Well, I beg to differ.
If you require sensitive legal documentation to be translated while ensuring best practices regarding confidentiality, your best options are:

➡️ Engaging your more local, boutique translation agencies, which tend to cultivate close and trustworthy relationships with select translators
At least you'll know who to trace if by chance a sensitive document does get leaked.
