When Melania Trump made reference to ‘Macedonia’ without ‘North’ preceding it in a speech she gave in March this year, the reaction was expected and immediate – the Greek Embassy in the USA sent a protest note on grounds of upholding the 2018 Prespa Agreement, but essentially it reflected Greek public anger.
On the other hand, many (ethnic) Macedonians around the world were cheering on ‘our’ girl – the ‘our’ refers to shared Yugoslav origins, which is where Melania would’ve drawn her automatic use of just ‘Macedonia’ as that is what the republic on the furthest side of the country Melania Trump grew up in at the time was called. Related to this is the widespread adoration throughout ex-Yugoslavia for ‘Yugoslav’ Melania Trump, though this peaked when she first became the First Lady of the USA in 2016 and has since waned.
How then to mark Melania Trump as the greatest promoter of Macedonia? Of course, in true Balkan style with a hagiographic song, and with AI able to churn out slop like this so quickly, songs like this are more prolific than ever.
Now, I know there will be some laughing at some Macedonians for doing this but there are individuals in every country and nation that do this type of crass identity politics, including yours. No-one can claim the moral high ground here.
