There's one sure-fire word that will stick out in like a sore thumb if used in text or copy for Australia. Some Aussies don't even know what this term means...
🌏 It's 'abroad'
Honestly, there's hardly a chance of people in Australia saying or using 'abroad', not solely because it's just not used but doing so can also be perceived as being overly pompous, a trait that won't get you far in Australia.
So what do Aussies use instead for 'in or to a foreign country or countries'?
🌏 It's always 'overseas'.
And the reason for this is simple geography.
As Australia has no land borders with any other country, to get to another country you always have to go over a sea to get there, hence 'overseas'.
🌏 Fun fact: the closest Australian territory to any other country is Saibai Island in the Torres Strait, which lies a mere 4 kilometres off the southern coast of Papua New Guinea.
For proof of this universal Australian use of 'overseas', then check out Smartraveller, the Australian government website giving travel advice for Australians overseas. You won't find any reference to 'abroad' there.
But the Australian authorities are aware that English-speakers outside of Australia do not necessarily use 'overseas' in the same way as Aussies. That's why the Australian Government Study Australia website, aimed at people around the world interested in studying in Australia, uses the term 'abroad' instead.
