"[Australian] 'Thought Leader’ On LinkedIn Forgets To Australianise All The American Words ChatGPT Uses"
That was the headline in the satirical news portal Betoota Advocate – Australia’s answer to the Onion and the Daily Mash.
And honestly? It stings because it’s true.
The satire works because it’s relatable.
If you position yourself or your brand as proudly Aussie... but your content is sprinkled with US spelling, tone, words and phrasing, Aussies will notice.
Maybe not consciously
Maybe not immediately
But they will feel it
Why this matters 👇
If your audience is Australian:
• US English does not equal authenticity
• British English isn’t quite right either
• "close enough" isn’t good enough
Australian English has its own spelling conventions, rhythm, tone, idioms and cultural cues. The differences from US or British English are subtle... but they’re there.
And here’s the kicker...
Most Aussies wouldn't be able to formally explain the differences… but they’ll absolutely sense when something feels "off".
That tiny crack in authenticity?
It plants doubt – and doubt erodes trust, especially in the age of AI.
With tools like ChatGPT defaulting to US English, it’s easier than ever to accidentally publish content that sounds essentially... imported. If your brand is dinky-di Aussie, your language needs to be too.
Before you publish:
✔ check your spelling
✔ check your idioms
✔ check your vocab
✔ check your tone
✔ localise properly – don’t just "translate"
If you want your content to sound unmistakably Australian (and not like it just landed from California), get it reviewed by someone who knows Australian English inside out.
That’s where I come in!
