Today is Mother's Day in Australia and in many other countries throughout the world.
Gifts and breakfast in bed for mum may be what most people think when talking about Mother's Day, proof of which is one of the top hashtag suggestions for today being "mothersdaygiftideas".
However, particularly in 1970s Australia, today has also been a day of protest to highlight the many (still) unaddressed issues mothers face, such as access to child care, recognition for the huge amount of unpaid work mothers do, and the rights of domestic violence victims.
'The day's origins lie in feminist campaigns in the late 19th and early 20th century to promote peace and greater recognition of women's social and economic contribution as mothers. For subsequent generations of feminists, it has proven to be a site of contest. This was especially so in the 1970s, when women's liberationists set out to challenge prevailing expectations of female domesticity.'
